NEA 'GOT TUITION?' / HUFFINGTON POST ONLINE VIDEO CONTEST RULES
Contest Overview:
- Create a video that tells us how the college affordability crisis is affecting you and what you think should be done about it.
- Video should tell your story about student debt, or about how rising tuition rates are impacting you and your future.
- The video should be no longer than 2 minutes.
- Contest begins August 20, 2008 and submissions are due on September 17, 2008.
- Contestants must send their video, along with their name, address, daytime phone number and email address to gottuition08@gmail.com
- The top 5 videos, based on a decision by the contest judges, will be posted to www.gottuition.org and voted on by the public.
- Winner will be announced October 6, 2008.
The judges are looing for:
- Creativity
- How well your message is conveyed
- Relevance to the theme of "College Affordability"
Prize:
The entrant who submits the video which receives the most votes by the end of the voting period will receive a check for $1,000 and the winner will have an opportunity to blog on the topic of college affordability on the frton page of huffingtonpost.com (subject to editorial discretion). Submissions created and produced by more than one individual shall be treated as submissions by one entrant and only one price will be awarded to such entrant.
Eligibility:
Contest is open to any individual 18 years or older who would like to share their story about college affordability.
Contest Rules:
- Please, no use of profanity and no personal attacks on anyone.
- Submissions shall not expressly advocate for the election or defeate of a candidate for any federal, state or local elected office. Submissions may not use phrases such as "vote for", "re-elect", "support", "defeate", or "Smith for Congress." Submissions also may not use phrases like "vote pro-education" or "vote to make college affordable" if the video displays or makes reference to any clearly identified candidate who is described as pro-education or pro-college affordability.
- Although submissions may reference a candidate for elected office, submissions shall not take a position on the character of a candidate for elected office and shall be limited to discussing a candidate's positions on policy and legislation related to college affordability.
- Videos should represent the original ideas of the entrant and should not be reproductions of any material crated by a political campaign or political party.
- No video may depict harmful or illegal activity or substance, or offensive subject matter as determined at our sole discretion. No video shall portray NEA or its affiliates in a negative light.
- Entratns will be required to declare that they have consent from any people appearing in their ads. Note that consent requirements may vary from state to state, but often include signed releases. You can find a sample release here, a clearance report here, and a location release here.
- NEA is not responsible for late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, illegible, or unintelligible entries. Entries will not be returned to contestants.
- All submissions must state the name, address, telephone number and email address of all individuals who created and produced the video. Submissions by a group of individuals shall be treated as a submission by one entrant. Such submissions should indicate the individual to whom the prize money should be awarded if the submission is the contest winner.
Copyright and Third Party Rights:
By submitting an entry, you warrant that you are the sole author and copyright owner of the entry or that you have permission (via license or otherwise) to use or incorporate those entry portions authored or owned by third parties. If you are thinking about using existing music, video clips, photos, etc., you will likely need to get the copyright owner's permission before using the material in your video. A sample master use license for pre-recorded music is available here and a sample sync release is available here (you need both). Some musicians make their music available under a Creative Commons license that would allow you to use it in your video for free. You can find more information on that option at http://creativecommons.org/legalmusicforvideos. You can also purchase pre-cleared music that you should be able to use in your video at sites like http://www.sirgroovy.com/.
By submitting an entry, you warrant that the video does not infringe any third party’s rights and that you have obtained any necessary permissions from all relevant third parties to submit the Submission. You may not be, nor may you use in a submitted video, parties who: 1) are represented under contract (e.g., by a talent agent or manager) that would limit or impair our ability to show the video in any media form; 2) have an acting or modeling contract that would make their appearance in the video a violation of any third party rights; 3) are under a merchandising agreement; or 4) are under any other contractual relationship, including but not limited to guild and/or union memberships, that may prohibit them from participating fully in this promotion, or from allowing us to use the video online and in television media.
Terms of Use:
By submitting a video to this contest, each entrant automatically confers on the NEA an irrevocable, nonexclusive and unrestricted license to use the video for purposes consistent with the association’s goals. This includes the right to copy, reproduce, display, publish, broadcast, or otherwise distribute the video, and to make derivative works based upon the video or a substantial portion of it without attribution or prior permission. Other than the authority to the NEA, as set out in this paragraph, entrants retain ownership rights of their videos.
NEA also reserves the right to exclude or modify any video that we believe doesn't meet the above criteria, at our sole discretion.
The winning entrant’s acceptance of the prize constitutes permission (except where prohibited by law) to use winner's name, hometown (including state) and/or likeness for promotional purposes without further compensation.
Judging:
All decisions of the contest judges are final. NEA reserves the right to disqualify and remove from the website any entry which is, in the judging panel's discretion, inappropriate, offensive, defamatory, or demeaning to NEA’s reputation or goodwill.
General Terms and Conditions:
By participating, entrants agree that NEA, its agents and representatives, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors are not responsible or liable for, and shall be released and held harmless from: (i) telephone, electronic, hardware or software program, network, Internet, or computer malfunctions, failures, or difficulties of any kind; (ii) any condition caused by events beyond the control of NEA that may cause the Contest to be disrupted or corrupted; (iii) any printing or typographical errors in any materials associated with the Contest; (iv) any and all losses, damages, rights, claims and actions of any kind in connection with or resulting from participation in the Contest, or acceptance of the prize, including without limitation, claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy. NEA is not responsible or liable for Entries that are not successfully submitted by the end of the submission period. NEA reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel Contest at any time if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper conduct of the Contest. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of participant and NEA in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules or provisions (whether of the District of Columbia or any other jurisdiction), that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the District of Columbia.
