Kajol is one of the few actresses that have made a definitive impact on Indian film industry. She was born into the Mukherjee-Samarth family, on 5th August, 1974, in Mumbai, India. She is the daughter of famous Hindi film actress Tanuja and late producer Shomu Mukherjee. Her younger sister, Tanishaa Mukherjee is also an actress. Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee are film producers, while her grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee, who was a filmmaker. Rani Mukerji, Sharbani Mukherjee & Mohnish Behl are her cousins who also appear in Bollywood movies, while her another cousin Ayan Mukerji, is a director. She did his schooling from the St Joseph Convent boarding school, Panchgani. Later on, she began her acting career at the age of seventeen. In the year 1992, she made his acting debut with romantic drama flick ‘Bekhudi’. But she got huge recognition through Abbas- Mastan’s directorial venture ‘Baazigar’ (1993), co-starred Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Shilpa Shetty. Then in the following year she appeared in Yash Raj Film’s romantic drama film ‘Yeh Dillagi’, alongside Akshay Kumar & Saif Ali Khan. The success of the flick proved to be a breakthrough for her career and for this film she earned first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare awards. She is married to most popular Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and the couple have two children, namely, Nysa and Yug. Thereafter in the year 1995, she appeared in two major commercially successful flicks Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Karan Arjun’ & Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ both opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film DDLJ eventually garnered as the second-highest grossing film of the year. Then she subsequently attained great prominence by playing female lead role in several successful movies such as ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’ (1998), ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ (1998), ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), & ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… ‘(2001). She also earned critical acclaim for playing against type in the 1997 mystery flick ‘Gupt: The Hidden Truth’ and the 1998 psychological thriller movie ‘Dushman’. She returned to films in the year 2006 with romantic thriller ‘Fanaa’, alongside Aamir Khan and since then she continued working infrequently, playing main roles in the dramas like ‘U Me Aur Hum’ (2008), ‘My Name Is Khan’ (2010), ‘We Are Family’ (2010), & the comedy–drama ‘Dilwale’ (2015), which also starred Shah Rukh Khan, Varun Dhawan, & Kriti Sanon in the lead roles. Thus she established herself as one of the most successful actress of India. In addition with acting, she is a social activist and for her work with widow and children, she received ‘Karmaveer Puraskaar’ in the year 2008. She has also garnered several accolades. In the year 2011,the Government of India , honoured her with prestigious Padma Shri award. She has also seen as a judge for reality show called ‘Rock-N-Roll Family’, which aired on Zee TV. She also holds a position of Manager at the Devgn Entertainment and Software Ltd.
