Prakash Raj is an Indian film actor, director, producer, thespian as well as television presenter who better known for his works in the south Indian films and a few Hindi movies. He was born on 26th of March, 1965, in Bengaluru, Karnataka to a Tulu speaking father Manjunath Rai and a Kannadiga mother Swarnalatha. He has a brother, Prasad Raj who is also an actor. He did his schooling at the St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, in Bangalore and later, joined St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bangalore. In the year 1944, he married to actress Lalitha Kumari and they have two daughters, Meghana & Pooja and a son ,Sidhu. But the couple divorced in 2009 and in the year 2010 he tied knot with choreographer Pony Verma. He began his acting career with Doordarshan in some Kannada television serials like ‘Bisilu Kudure’, ‘Guddada Bhootha’. Later on he appeared in Kannada movies in supporting role. He then made his first ever breakthrough with K. S. L. Swamy’s directed flick ‘Harakeya Kuri’, which featured Geetha and Vishnuvardhan. Geetha was impressed by his performance in the movie and hence as a result she introduced him to her mentor & Tamil movie director, K. Balachander. After working in the Kannada film as well as television industry for a few years he made his debut with Tamil film industry through ‘Duet’ (1994), which directed by K. Balachander. He has also been appeared in several stage shows by Mani Ratnam like ‘Naalai’, ‘Netru’ & ‘Indru’. He has played a variety of notable roles in several movies and also earned the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in the year 1998 for Mani Ratnam’s directorial venture ‘Iruvar’, a National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention for a Telugu flick ‘Antahpuram’, which directed by Krishna Vamsi in 1998 & a National Film Award for Best Actor in 2009 for his character in ‘Kanchivaram’, a Tamil movie which was directed by Priyadarshan and as a producer has garnered a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada for ‘Puttakkana Highway’ directed by his theatre friend B. Suresh in the year 2011. He has also worked in number of Bollywood films such as ‘Wanted’(2009), ‘Singham’ (2011), ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012), ’Mumbai Mirror’ (2013), ‘Policegiri’ (2013) and ‘Heropanti’(2014). Apart from acting he has directed and produced many Tamil, Telugu and kannada films, most of which earned him prestigious awards and were commercial success. He also host the second season of show called ‘Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi’.
